Why Use Flashcards with Your Young Learners?

When appropriately used, flashcards can be a wonderful learning tool for early learners.

I created these flashcards for you to use with your learner in a fun, engaging, and playful way.

Remember to use the cards as a starting point or a springboard for further learning about ocean animals.

Encourage conversation and add context to each animal rather than simply emphasizing mundane memorization and drill.

How to use Ocean Animal Flashcards with Children

Below are a few ideas for fun ways to use the ocean animal flashcards with your learner:

Get into Character: Use the cards to play your personalized variation of Charades.

You can call it ocean animal charades.

Take turns acting out the ocean creature while the other tries to guess the animal.

Matching/Memory Game:

Print two sets of the flashcards and play a simple memory-matching game.

Or you can grab our Ocean Animal Memory cards. They are smaller than the flashcards, making them ideal for a memory game.

The other difference is that they feature ocean animal graphics, while these flashcards have ocean animal photos.

Either way, memory games are great for strengthening focus and memory!

Sorting and Grouping

If your young learners are anything like mine, they love a sorting and grouping activity. Using the cards, have your learner sort the animals by type.

Children can sort the sea animals with fins from the ones with shells or tentacles.

Or, have them sort the ocean animals by size.

Big ocean animals like the whale versus small sea creatures like the seahorse.

This activity will encourage your learner to use their observation and classification skills.

Sensory Bin Activity: Create a sensory bin like this beach-themed sensory bin, and have the cards available for children to match the ocean figures in the sensory bin.
