Why Use Matching Cards with Young Learners
Matching games are more than just fun—they help develop:
- Visual memory
- Concentration and focus
- Critical thinking skills
- Early vocabulary and word-object recognition
One of my children would work with a speech pathologist as a toddler.
During their sessions, the speech pathologist used matching cards and similar resources to enthusiastically play games with my child and gently encourage him to use his words.
Watching those sessions taught me so much about how toddlers learn and the value of short, simple activities like a matching card game with mom.
This kind of activity is ideal for young learners who are just starting to build these critical cognitive skills, as it allows them to learn in a playful, comfortable, low-pressure way.
Ways to Use Summer Matching Cards
The great thing about matching cards is that they can be used for so much more than playing a classic memory/matching game.
That is why I think they are the perfect simple resource to have on hand.
Below are a few creative ideas for ways to use the summer matching cards:
Scavenger Hunt:
Have your little learner use the cards for a fun summer scavenger hunt.
They can hunt for the summer items around your home or backyard.
Speech and Vocabulary Activities:
Use the cards as a talking tool. Have your learner name each item.
Then, have them describe what it’s used for, or tell a story that includes that object.
This is a helpful activity to do with toddlers and preschoolers who are working to improve pronunciation, form sentences, and better their communication skills.
Story Starters
Choose a few random cards and challenge your child to make up a summer-themed story using those images as their inspiration.

This free download consists of two pages with six cards on each page.
You will print two copies of each page to create a matching pair of each card.
You should print the cards on quality card stock so your kid cannot see the image through the back of the paper when the cards are faced down.
I also recommend that you take the time to laminate and cut each card.
This will make the cards much more durable and easier to work with. I like to store them in a small pouch or Ziploc for easy access during downtime or travel.
