Valentine’s Day Heart Crayons
With Valentine’s Day just a little under one month away, I am sharing this super simple and fun Valentine’s Day activity for preschoolers plus a free printable.
Do you have loads of broken crayons around? If so, this will be a fun up-cycle and a way to make those broken crayons like new ones.
This project is as simple as gathering all of your child’s old and broken crayons and then melting them down to transform them into a new work of art. This is a cool way to give those broken and dead crayons a new life.
For this activity, you will be melting crayons using a silicone mold to create adorable heart-shaped crayons. The heart-shaped crayons can then be passed out as the perfect Valentine’s day gift for your child’s friends.
Bonus: I have also included free printable Valentine’s treat tags to go along with this project. You can find them at the end of this post.

Because I try to share activities that will maximize the fun and minimize your headache, I have added step-by-step instructions on how to make custom-shaped crayons.
I’ve also added printable instructions and tons of helpful tips….. Just in case you get lost along the way.
After having your heart crayons all made up you can place them into clear treat bags and add a cute label (free for you at the end of this post).
Isn’t this the cutest non-candy Valentine’s Day treat for preschoolers to share with their friends? I love that this is also a practical gift.
Supplies for Valentine’s Day Melted Crayon Activity
To make the heart-shaped crayons you only need two supplies.
Crayons: Homeschooling three young kids, I have purchased a ton of crayons. Crayons are a fairly common item so you likely won’t need to purchase any for this project. Because I purchase a large number of crayons at a time, we always have a wide variety of crayons available for a project like this.
Have your children round up all of their broken crayons. Remember to have them check for any that may be discarded in the bottom of their book bag…….. Collect Them All!
Silicone Molds: Silicone molds come in many different shapes and sizes. For the purpose of this tutorial, heart-shaped molds work best. Hearts just go well with Valentine’s Day.
You can also consider making crayons in other shapes by using dinosaur, star, or unicorn molds. Just be sure your crayon is in a shape that won’t easily break when children press the crayon on paper to color.
How to Make Heart-Shaped Crayons
Step 1: Collect all the broken and tattered crayons. Tip: If you have to buy a fresh pack of crayons grab a larger pack so that you can get a greater variety of colors.
Step 2: Preheat your oven to 200 degrees.
Step 3: Place all of your crayons in a bowl of warm water. Let the crayons soak for about 10-15 mins. Once the time has expired remove the crayons from the water and peel off their stickers.
Tip: Add a drop or two of dishwashing liquid to speed up the sticker removal process.
Step 4: Break the crayons into small pieces, and arrange them into desired color patterns.
Tip: The smaller the crayon pieces, the faster they will melt within the mold. For the purpose of this project, I allowed my children to arrange the crayons for their friends’ Valentine’s Day gifts. The crayons were separated into their friend’s favorite colors.
Step 5: Fill the silicone mold with the broken crayons. Place the mold onto a baking sheet.
Tip: It is okay if crayon molds are overfilled, the crayons will still melt down evenly.
Step 6: Place the baking sheet with molds into the preheated oven and allow the crayons to bake for 12-15 minutes or until the crayons are melted thoroughly.
Step 7: Once the crayons have melted, remove them from the oven and let them sit until they are fully cooled and hardened.
Tip: Place the crayon mold into the freezer for 25 minutes after removing it from the oven for a faster hardening process.
Lastly, remove the hardened crayons from the molds by pushing them out, and enjoy!
