Like most, our love of cornbread started when we were children.
My husband often recalls going to his grandmother’s house on a Sunday afternoon after church to be welcomed by the delicious aroma of baked goods filling the air.
He’d bypass the cakes and pies to greet the warm black cast-ironed skillet of southern cornbread. He tells me this recipe is comparable to his grandmother’s.

The recipe is as simple as mixing the ingredients, pouring the batter into a hot, buttery cast-iron skillet, and allowing it to bake in the oven. That’s It!

Homemade Skillet Cornbread
Easy homemade skillet cornbread recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 pinch salt
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 4 tbs unsalted butter, melted
Glaze
- 3 tbs honey (optional)
- 4 tbs unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees
- Mix dry ingredients in a large dry bowl
- In a separate bowl, mix eggs, milk, and sugar.
- Melt butter in cast iron skillet
- Mix wet and dry ingredients and melted butter till combined
- Add melted butter to the batter and mix until combined.
- Bake in the preheated oven until beautifully golden
On the rare occasion, you do have leftovers of this Skillet Cornbread, those slices can be easily preserved in the freezer for a later date.
Simply place the cornbread on parchment paper before putting them into a freezer bag. Freeze until you are ready to thaw and warm them.
